The National Anthem

February 5, 2013

I watched the Super Bowl and of course the National Anthem was performed. I thought that Alicia Keys did a terrific job. I’ve been reading about all the people criticizing her performance because she delivered the song in her style. The operative word is “style”. The National Anthem is a song, and throughout history a song is subject to interpretation, and that’s the beauty of a song. It’s not a prayer, it’s a song. When I did my version I chose to call it,” Defence of Fort McHenry”. Yes, the original spelling of defense was with a “c” instead of an “s”. The melody is from a British song called,”To Anacreon in Heaven”. I went into more detail on my blog “Defence of Fort McHenry”.

Songs have always been subject to arrangement so why should this one be any different. In my version I decided to change the time signature and the meter. I also accentuated the point that America is our home where we live, as Americans. I didn’t feel like I was doing anything immoral or sacrilegious. I leave the final decision up to the listener but all artistic presentations are personal and require the touch of individuality.
